TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was up more than 100 points in late-morning trading on Wednesday, led by strength in basic materials, while U.S. markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 136.51 points at 36,612.43.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 30.13 points at 53,761.72. The S&P 500 index was up 15.74 points at 7,743.94, while the Nasdaq composite was up 122.65 points at 26,568.09.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.84 cents US compared with 71.80 cents US on Tuesday.
The September crude oil contract was down two cents US at US$83.17 per barrel.
The December gold contract was up US$46.10 at US$4,487.20 an ounce.
