TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index moved lower in late-morning trading on Thursday, driven by weakness in basic materials, while U.S. markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 70.45 points at 36,591.69.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 42.98 points at 53,727.29. The S&P 500 index was up 45.44 points at 7,793.94, while the Nasdaq composite was up 215.28 points at 26,803.77.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.72 cents US compared with 71.79 cents US on Wednesday.
The September crude oil contract was down US$1.44 at US$81.83 per barrel.
The December gold contract was down US$41.40 at US$4,426.10 an ounce.
