A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a bus on the eastbound lanes of Highway 417 on Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews and the Ontario Provincial Police were dispatched at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 2, according to an OPP release.

“The pedestrian, an adult male, sustained critical and life-threatening injuries,” Ottawa Paramedic Service Marc-Antoine Deschamps said.

The man was stabilized by paramedics on scene and transported to the hospital Wednesday night, according to Deschamps.

The OPP, however, confirmed Thursday morning that the pedestrian had died.

Paramedics said there where no other injuries or casualties on scene as of Thursday morning.

Deschamps could not say if there were passengers on the bus.

“I can’t provide any further information at this time due to the circumstances of the incident … out of respect for the bus driver and the individual,” Ottawa OPP Detachment spokesperson Michael Fathi said.

Highway 417 was closed for several hours last night, OPP says.

The East Region OPP technical collision investigators and a reconstructionist were involved in the investigation.

Anyone who may have been a witness or has dashcam footage relevant to the incident is asked to contact Ottawa OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
