Dr. Baptiste Lacoste and his team were the first to study vasculature in the autistic brain, and discovered a problem in the cells lining the blood vessels, called the endothelial cells, in 2020. They found that blood vessels weren’t being activated properly in mouse models with a 16p11.2 deletion, 16p for short — one of the most common genetic mutations seen in autism.
