A very young driver and passenger escaped serious injuries when the vehicle they were in crashed into a cornfield in the Township of Laurentian Valley.
The Ontario Provincial Police, in a news release Wednesday, said an 11-year-old driver and a nine-year-old passenger were turned over to their parents following the single-vehicle collision on Monday.
At about 2:50 a.m. on Oct. 12, a member of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment was on foot patrol in west-end Pembroke when they “heard a vehicle doing burnouts nearby,” police said.
Officers in the area were alerted, and the vehicle was located on Jean Avenue, but when an officer tried to stop the vehicle, it accelerated away.
Police did not give pursuit, but soon after they discovered that the vehicle, which was found abandoned, had left the road and entered a cornfield at the intersection of Jean Avenue and TV Tower Road.
An hour later, after a search by the OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team, the children were found.
“It was determined that the vehicle had been taken from a parent without their knowledge or consent,” the police release stated. “The parents and youths were made aware that charges would not be pursued due to the youths being below the age of criminal responsibility.”
