Municipal elections in Ontario toppled some incumbents, elevated new names and returned some familiar faces to city halls across the province.
Monday’s vote was headlined by the mayoral race in the country’s biggest city, where Toronto’s Olivia Chow fended off challenger councillor Brad Bradford to win re-election.
Here are the results from five other mayoral races from around Ontario.
In one of the night’s biggest upsets, Alvin Tedjo pulled off a victory in Mississauga.
Tedjo, a city councillor and former Ontario Liberal leadership hopeful, defeated incumbent Carolyn Parrish and former mayor Bonnie Crombie.
Tedjo, who finished second in the 2024 mayoral byelection, started out as a longshot but began to rise in the polls as the front-runners clashed, culminating in a heated back-and-forth between Parrish and Crombie at a debate earlier this month.
Tedjo will now be expected to make good on a platform headlined by a promise to freeze property taxes for two years, and allow certain seniors to defer that tax bill until they sell or transfer their home.
It’s another disappointing setback for Crombie, who left Mississauga’s top job in 2024 after she took over as Ontario Liberal leader. The party added seats in the 2025 snap provincial election but fell short of expectations, and Crombie resigned as leader in January of this year.
Keanin Loomis, CEO of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, declared victory after garnering more than 40 per cent of the vote with the majority of polls reporting Monday night.
He unseated incumbent Andrea Horwath, who trailed in third place.
The race was a rematch of the 2022 contest, when Loomis lost to Horwarth by just 1,663 votes.
The race in Hamilton was held under the shadow of layoffs at Stelco, a U.S.-owned steelmaker.
Mark Sutcliffe cruised to re-election in Ottawa.
Sutcliffe’s main challenge came from Jeff Leiper, a longtime councillor who ran as the progressive alternative to the incumbent mayor.
But voters stuck with Sutcliffe, who pledged to keep property taxes low, maintain a hiring freeze on non-front-line workers and create free trade with neighbouring Gatineau.
Patrick Brown, the former Progressive Conservative leader, easily won his re-election bid.
Brown had secured a majority of the votes with most polls reporting Monday night.
He ran on a platform of more front-line policing and stronger action on extortion and auto theft, along with expanded transit and health-care facilities.
Brown took over the city’s top job in 2018 in the aftermath of sexual misconduct allegations that led to his resignation as PC leader. He has vehemently denied those allegations and no criminal charges were ever laid.
The winds of change were blowing in southwestern Ontario.
Windsor, the tariff-vulnerable capital of Canada’s auto sector, elected Fred Francis.
The city councillor put an end to incumbent Drew Dilkens’ 12-year tenure as mayor, in an election that took place amid the U.S.-Canada trade war.
Francis, the younger brother of former mayor Eddie Francis, pledged to hold the line on taxes, make city hall more transparent, eliminate strong mayor powers and cap transit fees.
