MONTREAL – Higher profits and revenue failed to keep TFI International’s stock from plunging on Friday as investors focused instead on the company’s earnings miss and a disappointing forecast.
The country’s largest trucking outfit saw its share price drop 14 per cent to $135.44 by early afternoon.
The decrease came after its net income and adjusted earnings fell short of expectations and its fourth-quarter outlook underwhelmed analysts.
CEO and chairperson Alain Bédard says the soaring price of diesel accounts for much of the problem, exacerbated in some of TFI’s U.S. operations due to a less efficient route network.
Analyst Benoit Poirier says weakness in the company’s less-than-truckload segment “overshadowed solid execution” from its full truckload and logistics divisions.
Nonetheless, TFI says net income jumped 25 per cent year-over-year to US$105.7 million last quarter, while revenue rose 13 per cent to US$2.23 billion.
