Scorpio season is here, and things are about to get very intense.

Obsessive and passionate, this water sign likes depth — no meaningless small talk, please. Ruled by Mars and Pluto, the sign is associated with sex, death and rebirth. Scorpio is a sign of transformation, and while it’s not a fire sign you can think of it as a phoenix continually rising from the ashes.

With all this complexity, it’s no wonder Scorpio is one of the more misunderstood of the 12 zodiac signs. Scorpios are characterized as being secretive, and are known for keeping a small circle (as king of the Scorpios, Drake, once said: “No new friends“). They just want to keep their hearts protected by their thick scorpion shell, even though they crave intimacy above all else.

This astrological season is a great time to reflect and dig deep. CBC Life astrologer Bryanna Collier says that we can “tap into our inner detectives to look beneath the surface, navigate hidden connections and unearth clarifying truths.”

But be mindful, “Our emotions tend to become more potent under [Scorpio’s] influence, and we could end up getting caught up in drama if we aren’t careful.”

Hit play on the five songs below to get a firmer grasp on the inner workings of this misunderstood sign, and let the soundtrack guide you through this season.

‘Shooting Star,’ Carly Rae Jepsen

Scorpio season can be kind of heavy, but this song from Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest album brings some much-needed levity. In an ode to this sign’s signature magnetism, Jepsen understands the inherent power Scorpios possess to attract what (and whomever) they want: “I got you now, I’m Scorpio/ it’s physical, it’s natural.”

‘Emotionless,’ Drake

For a song called “Emotionless,” this track from Drake has lots of emotion, making it a perfect encapsulation of Scorpio energy: they don’t always want to divulge how much they really care. This song’s got everything: loyalty to his Day 1s (“I gotta bring my brothers or else I feel out of place”), secrecy verging on paranoia (“I wasn’t hidin’ my kid from the world/ I was hidin’ the world from my kid”) and existential dread (“All these followers but who gon’ follow me to the end?/ I guess I’ll make it to the end and Imma find out then”).

‘Far Apart,’ MorMor

“Far Apart” is an optimistic song about some tough aspects of human relationships. This season is the perfect time to look deep inside yourself and heal, and that’s what this song is all about. What happens when two people haven’t yet faced their demons? MorMor knows, but he still believes in their ability to make it through together.

‘Meaningless,’ Charlotte Cardin

The chorus of this track says it all, as Charlotte Cardin belts out that she doesn’t want to live a meaningless life without her love. Remember, Scorpios are always searching for real, profound and passion-filled connection. These other boys just aren’t cutting it for her. (See also “Scorpio Season” for a bonus track from Cardin.)

‘Saviour,’ James Baley

“Saviour” is a song about James Baley reclaiming his own narrative. Digging deep and baring your soul is uncomfortable, but it’s in that discomfort where the truth lies. The saviour Baley seeks may actually exist within himself — a lesson we can all stand to remember.
