Veteran Toronto firefighter facing impaired driving charges in New Year’s Eve crash

A veteran Toronto firefighter is facing a charge of impaired driving following a New Year’s Eve crash in Markham.

Police in York Region say just before 6 p.m. on December 31, 2024, they were called to a two-vehicle crash in the 16th Avenue and Donald Cousens Parkway area.

Investigators say the driver of a pick-up truck, a 56-year-old Georgina man, was arrested at the scene for impaired driving. Two adults and two children in the second vehicle were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

CityNews has learned that Toronto Fire Captain Stephen Rodak was the one arrested and charged following the crash.

“The City of Toronto is aware of a vehicle collision that occurred last week involving a city employee who was off duty at the time. Our thoughts are with those involved, and we wish everyone a full and speedy recovery,” read a statement from the City of Toronto.
