House leader Karina Gould said she would represent a “new generation” if elected Liberal leader, making her bid to replace Justin Trudeau official Saturday afternoon.
Gould made the announcement by video on social media, joining former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland who have already announced their candidacies.
“There are people out there tearing down Canada, saying the country is broken, saying we should become American,” Gould says while walking through a snowy neighbourhood and equating true Canadian spirit to things like “helping your neighbour shovel their driveway after a snowstorm.”
“We are a strong, hardworking and caring people who do not back down from fighting for what is right.”
Chandra Arya, Jaime Battiste and Frank Baylis have also entered the contest to replace Trudeau, after he announced he would be stepping down as party leader earlier this month.
