Three suspects, including a male youth, have been charged in an alleged armed carjacking that occurred in Scarborough over the weekend, resulting in a collision with a police cruiser.

Toronto police officers were called to the Markham Road and Progress Avenue area at around 9 p.m. on Sunday for reports of a robbery.

It’s alleged that four suspects travelling in a stolen Honda Civic attended a parking lot, and three of the accused, wearing masks to disguise their identities, approached the victim, who was sitting in their vehicle.

Police said the group of suspects produced a handgun and demanded that the driver exit their car. The three suspects fled in the victim’s vehicle, with the fourth suspect driving away in the Honda Civic.

No physical injuries were reported.

Responding officers attempted to apprehend the suspects, leading to a multi-vehicle collision involving a police cruiser. The suspects then crashed into a tree, and the stolen Honda Civic was located nearby. Authorities also recovered a loaded Glock handgun inside the Honda.

Police said Zain Shahzad, 19, and Saad Sohail, 18, both of Toronto, were arrested and charged with various offences, including robbery with a firearm, pointing a firearm and disguise with intent, among other firearm-related crimes.

The pair were expected to appear in court on Monday.

A youth was also arrested and faced similar charges. The accused wasn’t identified through the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A fourth suspect remains wanted, but a description was not immediately provided.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.
