A 19-year-old Woodstock man has been charged in connection to a “violent” crash in Brampton late last year with ties to street racing.
Peel police say around 12:30 a.m. on November 24, 2024, a van was travelling westbound on Steeles Avenue and was attempting a left-hand turn onto Finch Avenue at Gorewood Drive when it crashed with an Audi that was going eastbound on Steeles.
A Mississauga man, who was a passenger in the van, was pronounced dead at the scene while the female driver, also from Mississauga, was seriously injured.
Four other people including the driver of the second vehicle were also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
At the time investigators said they were aware of potential links between street racing in that area and that it would be one of several factors considered as a possible cause of the crash.
Following an investigation police determined that the driver of the second vehicle had just left a nearby street-racing event prior to the crash.
Mitchel Hunter, 19, of Woodstock has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm and dangerous operation causing death. He appeared in court and was released with conditions pending a later court date in Brampton.
“Dangerous driving has tragic consequences for our community,” said Deputy Chief Marc Andrews. “Those who put our community in harm’s way will be arrested and charged. Accountability and meaningful repercussions are vital to addressing and deterring dangerous drivers.”
Rhianne Campbell reports on a fatal crash in Brampton on November 24, 2024, with possible ties to street-racing.
