Residents in an area of North York are dealing with flooding on their street, affecting some homes, following a watermain break on Wednesday morning.

In a statement to CityNews, a spokesperson with the City of Toronto said the watermain break occurred on Pelmo Crescent between Longview Drive and Kames Avenue, near Jane Street and Highway 400.

“The break led to flooding on the street, prompting the closure of the road. The watermain has been shut off to prevent further flooding,” the statement reads.

The City said some homes in the area have been impacted.

A resident who lives at a home on the street said he woke up to the sounds of water around 5 a.m., and then went downstairs when he saw water gushing into his basement.

“As soon as I hit the landing in my basement, I could see water … I walked into ankle-deep water and saw the drain in my laundry room, water was gushing out,” he said.

“I could see through my window that the water was just rolling down the street, like a river.”

He said his neighbour also had flooding in their basement, which is when they realized it was a watermain break.

“It was too large to really see how much had really taken place until it got lighter and then realized this was absolutely something major that was happening,” the resident said.

He also said there’s been waterman issues on this street for the past four to five years.

“There’s been watermain breaks over on the corner, you go up the street there. It’s just been a matter of this magnitude was about to happen.”

The City said crews are conducting repairs to the watermain, which was installed in the area back in 1952.

Water service was restored to affected homes in the area Wednesday evening.

“Once the crews have completed their investigation, the City will provide an estimated timeline for when repairs will be completed. The road will remain closed until further notice.”

It’s not yet known what caused the watermain break.
