Temperatures are on the rise and the city is full of spirit as International Women’s Day approaches.
This weekend, make sure you enjoy some time out of the house as you could see some sunshine and temperatures above zero. With a warmer outlook on the next few days, here’s what’s going on in Toronto.
Weather
On Friday, expect a mix of sun and clouds during the day with a high of 2 C. That night, there will be cloudy period that could bring a 30 per cent chance of flurries and a low of -7 C.
Saturday will also be a mixture of sun and clouds but a 40 per cent chance of flurries is expected during the day with a high of 0 C. The skies are expected to clear by night but drop to a low of -7 C.
Finally, Sunday will continue with the sunny and cloudy weather with a high of 3 C before dropping to a low of 0 C.
TTC
The TTC will have a number of closures over the weekend that could impact your travels.
From 11 p.m. Friday to Sunday, Line 2 service between Woodbine and Kennedy stations will be closed and replaced by shuttle buses to accommodate track work. Warden station will be closed, but all other stations impacted will be open to purchase fares, tickets, and connect to other routes. At this time, it is unclear what time the service disruption is expected to end on Sunday.
Line 1 service will also change this weekend, as trains between St George and St Andrew stations will not be running to allow for planned track work. Shuttle buses will not be operating due to construction along the route and Museum, St Patrick, and Queen’s Park stations will be closed.
The closure is expected to last from Saturday to Sunday. The TTC is urging customers to use the following alternative routes while this service disruption is in place:
- Take Line 1 southbound between Finch and Union stations to get downtown.
- Take the 94 Wellesley, 506 Carlton, 505 Dundas, 501 Queen, or 504 King to travel east and west downtown.
Things to do in the city
The annual celebration of International Women’s Day will take place this weekend as individuals across the city get together for a rally and march. The event will start at 11 a.m. in the Oise Auditorium on University of Toronto’s campus and the march will begin at 1 p.m. For more information, you can visit the International Women’s Day Toronto website.
The celebrations of International Women’s Day continue with the HER Market in Scarborough, a marketplace promoting women owned businesses. Those looking to attend can visit the Scarborough Town Centre mall during regular business hours to shop different products from female entrepreneurs in person. The city’s free skate lending library is coming to the Coca Cola Coliseum on Friday. From 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. you can skate on the same ice as the Toronto Marlies and rent skates, helmets, and balancers at no cost. Admission is free and there is paid parking available on-site at Exhibition Place.
You have a chance to recreate the classic, “The Starry Night”, painting by Van Gogh this weekend during a “A Starry Paint Night Workshop” hosted by a local art gallery in Scarborough. The Artbox Studio and Gallery will be guiding beginners and experienced artists in their own unique recreation of the famous painting by using their own colours and composition. The event is on March 7 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and tickets are $46.27 including tax. To reserve your spot, tickets can be bought on their website.
Those anxiously waiting for the release of A Minecraft Movie have the opportunity to get a special, in-person game experience this weekend as Yorkdale Shopping Centre hosts “A Minecraft Movie March Break Experience.” The event will feature a life-sized LED portal, lifelike characters and setting pieces from the film, Lego Minecraft products, giveaways, and photo ops.
