Alex Ovechkin is now the NHL’s greatest goal scorer with goal No. 895, surpassing the mark set by Wayne Gretzky 26 seasons ago.
The Washington Capitals sniper set the new standard with his power-play goal in the second period against the New York Islanders on Sunday, scoring in his fifth straight game.
Ironically, Ovechkin set the mark in his 1,487th career game – the same number it took Gretzky to establish the previous record.
