Police have made an arrest in connection with the death of a 74-year-old Hamilton man who was stabbed outside of his home in the city’s historic Corktown neighbourhood last week.
Officers were initially called to a residence near Hunter Street East and Spring Street around 4 p.m. on March 16, for reports of an assault.
When they arrived at the scene, police found 74-year-old Charles James Francis Jouvence sitting on the porch outside the four-unit home suffering from a stab wound. He was later pronounced dead.
As police made their way through the residence, a suspect was located with an “edged weapon” and an interaction ensued, causing at least one officer to discharge their firearm, authorities said.
The province’s police watchdog was then called to investigate.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the suspect was shot by police and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police, among other officials, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
The agency says six investigators have been assigned to the case, including two forensic experts. Their investigation is ongoing.
On Sunday, March 23, authorities formally arrested the suspect, who has been identified as 30-year-old David Gomez-Rodriguez.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
