Adam Ryan’s favourite thing about Toronto’s food scene? The fact that we can source so many wonderful ingredients, right here in our own backyard. “From spring to the end of summer, I take my cooks, my friends and whoever wants to come, to my favourite foraging spots in and outside of the city,” he says. “We responsibly harvest everything from ramps, fiddleheads and watercress, to wild ginger, mushrooms and berries. Everything finds its way onto my menu, and it gives me and our guests a connection to the place where we live and breathe.”
These treasures have been delighting diners at Azura, a newish Mediterranean restaurant on the Danforth where Ryan is both partner and executive chef. They wowed the Michelin inspectors recently as well; this past fall, the team received two nods: one recommendation and one exceptional cocktail award. “Azura is the culmination of Mediterranean flavours based on my experience as a chef growing up in the Canadian Shield: incredible spring bounties, passionate summers and uniquely Canadian falls and winters,” Ryan says. “We take what we’re given and turn it into a multi-course meal of flavours.”
Ryan adores many of the other flavours available across the city as well. Here, he shares some of his favourite spots where he always eats well.
Best date-night spot
Quetzal, 419 College St
“There have been a few changes in the restaurant menu’s personality since Quetzal opened back in 2018, but a lot of other things remained consistent: the atmosphere, the glow and heat from the wood fired kitchen, and the authentic Mexican flavours all kissed with that smoky flavour. Last time I was there, I had a sweetbread dish that hit all the right flavours and they were cooked perfectly. I love that they are serious about their food and drink program but offering it up in a more approachable environment.”
Hidden gem
Latin World, various locations
“Back in 2017, I lived at Dufferin and Bloor and was first introduced to Latin World. A hidden taco counter at the back of a small grocer. I would go in and pick up a bag of tacos on their $1 taco day as I stocked up on pantry items for my house. Jumping off the subway on my way home and stopping in for a road burrito was (and still is) a great way to end the day.”
Repeat reservation
Enoteca Sociale, 1288 Dundas St W
“It would be even more of a repeat option if they weren’t so fully booked all the time! My go-to is their ‘nduja arancini, cacio e pepe, and beef crudo topped with pecorino cheese. It’s always a good idea to order the branzino and wash it all down with a splash of Lambrusco.”
Best late-night craving spot
416 Snack Bar, 181 Bathurst St
“An institution in the Toronto late-night scene. They have been my go-to for late-night dining for over a decade. Consistently open until 2 a.m. The Korean fried chicken never misses. Their newer space, Short Turn, is offering up a similar experience in a different space. A lot of the classics have made their way over to the Short Turn menu, so you won’t miss out either way.”
Comfort food
Allen’s, 143 Danforth Ave
“They are a pub classic. Here’s a hot tip: Go during their steak festival and they’ll be grinding up their burgers with all the trim from the dry aged beef they’re serving on the special menu.”
Best takeout
Pizzeria Libretto, various locations
“Also good for dining in, I appreciate the fact that I can order a delicious pizza and have it ready within a few short minutes. I like the eggplant pizza topped with ricotta salata as well as the ‘nduja. The fact that you can now buy these pizzas frozen in the grocery store just reinforces the point that they are good anywhere and anytime.”
Favourite weekend brunch place
The Wren, 1382 Danforth Ave
“The Wren opens up early on Saturday and Sunday and there’s a reason the staff are met with a lineup waiting for the door to be unlocked. They have a great playlist, they’re pouring a rotation selection of Ontario craft beers, and offer a mixed selection of snacks and sandwiches that hit all the marks. Grab a fried-chicken sandwich and a cold pint of beer and your Sunday funday is off to a good start.”
Best cocktail bar
Cry Baby Gallery, 1468 Dundas St W
“Escape the Toronto chills by entering the gallery and head on through into the dimly lit cocktail bar in the back. The gallery in the entranceway acts as a chill barrier for the guests in the back to stay warm as more people come in and out through the evening looking for a boozy libation. I tend to keep it classic with a negroni, but they also make a really delicious spicy marg. The intimate atmosphere and exceptional staff make you want to stay for another, and then another.”
