NORTH VANCOUVER – There’s a heavy police presence at the constituency office of British Columbia’s infrastructure minister, Bowinn Ma, who says it was the scene of a “frightening” security incident early Friday.
Small scorch marks are visible on the door to the office in North Vancouver, B.C., and the interim leader of the federal NDP, Don Davies, says without offering details that the incident was a “blatant act of terror.”
Ma says in a statement that all meetings and appointments at the office have been cancelled for the day.
Her statement says that thankfully, nobody was injured, and she appreciates the concern expressed by community members.
Ma doesn’t describe the incident and says due to an active police investigation, she won’t be able to provide more details about what happened, although she wants to thank the officers who have responded.
North Vancouver RCMP say they will provide a briefing this afternoon about an incident at Esplanade Ave., where Ma’s office is located.
Davies says on the social media platform X that he was “deeply alarmed” by the incident.
“This blatant act of terror is an affront to democracy and has no place in our nation. We are grateful no one was hurt and hope those responsible are apprehended as soon as possible,” Davies wrote.
Premier David Eby says his thoughts are with Ma, her staff, and community.
“Bowinn Ma is an incredible community leader, who I am proud to work with every day. No matter who you are, or what you do for a living, you have a right to safety at work,” he says in a social media post.
Ma’s statement says the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning.
“I appreciate the concern expressed by community members and am grateful to serve such a caring and compassionate community,” she says.
The door to Ma’s office was ajar this afternoon, with officers examining and dusting the doorway.
Workers were still inside the floors above, watching the police operation.
A spokesperson for the premier’s office says other MLAs were not advised to close their doors, but the office had advised caution and wants staff and legislators to do what they feel comfortable with.
