Earlier this week, the Star published a list of the eight worst songs of ‘90s, and a list of the best songs of that decade as chosen by Canadian musicians.
These lists were popular, but also controversial, generating a healthy amount of spirited debate and discussion in the comment section. In response, we asked Star readers for your take on the best and worst songs of the ‘90s.
Here are some of the responses we got — feel free to add yours in the comments below.
Best songs of the ‘90s
- Best song of the ‘90s for me was Sinéad O’Connor “Nothing Compares 2 U” for those “lost love moments” tied with “Gonna Make you Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C + C Factory for a housecleaning energy boost. — Charlene
-
“Absolutely” by the Headstones. Best pure hard rock song of the decade. — Rob
- Big Sugar, “Ride Like Hell.” — Michael
- “Wannabe” by Spice Girls is such an iconic ‘90s song and makes you want to get up and start singing. “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears is also iconic of the ‘90s, also makes you want to start singing. “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden also made its mark in the ‘90s.” — Dania
-
As a huge fan of Blue Rodeo, I’m going to go with “5 Days in May.” It’s a beautiful song and a huge favourite of the band’s fans. Another great song from them in the ‘90s was “Lost Together.” — Alison
-
“Claire” by Rheostatics would be my pick. Dreamy and the crunchy attack of that guitar solo. So heavy. — Steven
Worst songs of the ‘90s
- “Waterfalls” by TLC. Cannot stand that song. — Dania
- As a parent in the ‘90s, the closing theme for “Barney” easily elicits a more intense negative reaction than any of these songs. — Gerry
- Santana with Rob Thomas, the song “Smooth.” — Cathy Weber
- I know she’s an icon but please … stop the madness with “The Power of Love” by Céline Dion … gag. — Charlene
- I would have put “Mambo #5,” “Macarena,” “Boom Boom Boom Boom!” by Venga Boys, “Blue” by Eiffel 65, and any ballad by Bryan Adams. — Bernie
- Don’t get me wrong here, Shania Twain is lovely and talented, but I went to four weddings in 1999 and “From This Moment On” ruined all of them. — Mike
