A strong cold front is set to sweep through Ontario on Monday, bringing powerful winds and bursts of heavy snow, triggering widespread weather warnings.

Parts of the province, including Owen Sound, Bruce Peninsula, Port Carling, Timmins, Northern and Southern Grey County, and a few others, are under snow squall and blizzard warnings. Environment Canada forecasts 10 to 20 cm of snow for these regions by Tuesday.

“Southwesterly winds will intensify this morning. Conditions will deteriorate this afternoon as flurries become heavy at times in advance of a strong cold front,” Canada’s weather agency wrote.

“Strong wind gusts in combination with heavy flurries will result in blizzard conditions, especially later this afternoon into this evening.”

Toronto and parts of the GTA remain under a special weather statement due to forecasted winds of up to 70 or 80 km/h, and power outages are possible. Environment Canada says the wind will gradually decrease through tonight.

Other areas in the province, including Prince Edward County and Georgian Bay, could experience maximum wind gusts of up to 100 km/h.

Cold front on the way

Environment Canada forecasts a strong cold front will move through Toronto and the GTA on Monday night. This may be associated with bursts of heavy snow and blowing snow, reducing visibility.

The hazardous mix of heavy snowfall and strong winds could take commuters and drivers by surprise across the region, and motorists are being advised to exercise caution when travelling in the GTA.

Temperatures are slated to drop overnight, and by Tuesday morning, Toronto residents will wake up to -11 C, though it will feel more like -20 with the wind chill.

The extreme cold should be temporary. Temperatures will be less brisk on Wednesday, with a forecasted daytime high of -1 C.
