Power cuts are a daily reality across the island, and unexpected nationwide blackouts can last more than 24 hours. While most large hotels and resorts run on generators, fuel shortages mean even those can’t be counted on, leaving guests potentially without food service, running water, hot water or electricity. Public transportation, including taxis, is frequently disrupted, and some travellers have been temporarily stranded with rental cars. Long lineups at gas stations have led to altercations.
