Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to call a snap federal election on Sunday for an expected vote on April 28, the Globe and Mail reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.
A final call on the April 28 vote will be made by Carney, the Globe and Mail says. Canada’s Liberal Party has jumped into a lead in some public opinion polls on the eve of an election, as voters respond to Justin Trudeau’s exit and Carney’s rise to lead the government.
Carney, the former central banker who replaced Trudeau as prime minister last week, assumed the role during one of the most hostile moments in Canada-US relations in recent history. US President Donald Trump has threatened to use “economic force” to try to turn Canada into a US state and has already imposed steep tariffs on many Canadian goods, with Canada retaliating in kind.
In a recent interview on Fox News, Trump said he would rather work with the Liberal Party leader in Canada to resolve a trade war he instigated with Ottawa.
