Toronto punches well above its weight when it comes to range and variety, says chef Jonathan Poon. “There’s a real spirit of small, chef-driven places here that you don’t always find in bigger, more corporate dining markets,” he explains. “In other big cities, especially ones with higher costs, it’s harder for independent restaurants to survive.”
Poon’s own empire is thriving. Dubbed the “King of Ossington,” he’s behind the popular Paris Paris, Superpoint, and Favorites Thai BBQ (plus the late, great Chantecler). Now, he’s opened Portuguese spot Taberna Lx, a fresh spin on Portuguese cusine. “Toronto has no shortage of Portuguese restaurants, but most are rooted in tradition. At Taberna Lx, we’re offering a new take, which distinctly feels like Portugal today,” Poon says. “It’s still Portuguese in spirit, but with the energy and creativity you’d find in Lisbon’s current dining scene.”
Toronto itself is bursting with its own energy and creativity. Here’s where Poon goes when he wants to eat and drink the best of the best.
