OPP are warning truck drivers and operators that they can be help responsible after a collision with an overpass on Highway 401 “peeled the roof right off” a commercial vehicle, damaging the bridge.

The truck struck the Shanly Road overpass between Iroquois and Johnstown on Wednesday said police.

“Fortunately on the roof corners caught the bridge, leaving only marks and no significant damage. But this could have been much worse.”

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation helped OPP officers with the investigation, and the truck’s driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with driving an over-height vehicle.

Both drivers and operators can be hold responsible for several offences relating to commercial motor vehicles, said OPP.

“While the driver is responsible for how and when the vehicle is driven, the operator is still responsible for permitting the driver and the vehicle on the road, and ensuring proper licensing and inspection are completed.”
