On Saturday, wildfire survivors gathered in Pasadena for the Wildfire Recovery and Rebuild Conference, presented by the Los Angeles Sentinel.
The goal of the March 29 conference was to empower and educate the community as they navigate the recovery and rebuilding process. Altadena was hardest-hit by the Eaton Fire, the deadliest of the Los Angeles wildfires that devastated the region in January. As Altadena grapples with the loss of thousands of homes, the conference served as a resource hub for families determined to rebuild, connecting them with experts and critical guidance.
“We have to rebuild because if we don’t, we lose an entire community,” said LA Sentinel President Danny Bakewell Sr. as he addressed the audience. “We don’t intend to lose the entire community. We intend to rebuild from the smallest detail.”
Supporting Altadena’s recovery on all fronts
The Brotherhood Crusade is doing its part to support recovery. The storied Los Angeles service organization, with Bakewell as board chair, is harnessing its network and expertise to raise and distribute direct monetary support to residents impacted by the fires. “What a lot of people needed was money—money to go and lease an apartment, get a hotel room, all the basic things that you don’t pay a lot of attention to,” said Bakewell.
Since January, the Brotherhood Crusade has raised over $600,000, working in partnership with Urban One Cares to help spread the word. “It’s a very important campaign—the more we raise, the more we can do,” said Bakewell.
Connecting wildfire survivors with critical resources
The Wildfire Recovery and Rebuild Conference gathered key figures who provided guidance and insight, including California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, and County Assessor Jeff Prang. The conference covered topics like mortgage relief, property taxes, and rebuilding homes. “We want to make sure that you have the ability to steer your life in the right direction,” said Bakewell. “We intend to put you on a safe ground … to make sure your lives can begin to restore and rebuild.”
