With winter officially over, we are now entering the GTA’s other season — construction.

Road crews with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) are back at work on a number of 400-series highways.

Here is a look at where work is underway and where work with soon begin as the weather warms up.

What to expect on your drive now

Last week, lane restrictions started up on the northbound Highway 427, north of Highway 401, with traffic reduced from three lanes to two. Crews are doing work on several bridges in that area.

On Monday night, construction also began on the southbound Highway 427. Four lanes are now reduced to three from Highway 409 to Airport Road for the same bridge work.

Maintenance crews have also put a construction zone into place on the eastbound Highway 401 at Highway 410 express. Lanes have been reduced from three to two for work on that interchange.

Starting Tuesday, the southbound Allen Road ramp to the eastbound and westbound Highway 401 will be closed until the end of June for construction at Wilson Station. The southbound lanes of the Allen approaching the 401 have also been reduced to two lanes until the end of the year.

The MTO says the same work from last year on the westbound Highway 401 between Avenue Road and the Highway 400 express will return late spring.

Last year, the westbound 401 express lanes were reduced from three lanes to two between Avenue Road and Dufferin Street, and reduced from four lanes to three between Dufferin and Highway 400.

This will be the final year of work on a project that began in 2023. Crews have been rehabilitating the 401 bridges that cross over Wilson Avenue, Bathurst Street, Dufferin Street, and the CN rail tracks east of Keele Street.

This summer, construction on the eastbound Highway 403 will see reduced lanes between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Hurontario Street.

All of the above construction is expected to continue until the end of the year.
