OTTAWA—U.S. President Donald Trump will act Saturday on his threat to levy 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products, says White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Saying she had just spoken to Trump in the Oval Office, within an hour of a Reuters report suggesting Trump would delay the application of tariffs against Canada and Mexico until March 1, and provide a process for the countries to seek exemptions for certain imports, Leavitt called the report “false.”
Trump will proceed with the 25 per cent tariffs against Canada and Mexico and levy an additional 10 per cent tariff on Chinese imports to halt “the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans,” she said.
“These are promises made and promises kept by the president,” said Leavitt.
Asked if Trump would exempt oil imports, Leavitt said, “I don’t have an update or read out for you on the exemptions, but those tariffs will be for public consumption in about 24 hours tomorrow, so you can read them then.”
