Dr. Cornel West To Deliver Keynote Address At Morehouse College

Renowned philosopher, scholar, and public intellectual Dr. Cornel West will serve as the keynote speaker for Morehouse College’s 141st Commencement Ceremony, taking place Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m. on the historic Century Campus. In recognition of his impactful influence across education, philosophy, and social justice, Dr. West will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Morehouse College.

Who is Dr. Cornel West?

A former professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton, Dr. West is widely respected for his profound scholarship and commitment to truth, love, and justice. His academic repertoire spans the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, African American critical thought, philosophy of religion, cultural theory, literature, politics, and music. At the heart of his life’s work is a mission to uphold the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by engaging diverse audiences in honest dialogue about equity, compassion, and moral integrity.

The author of 20 books and editor of 13 more, Dr. West is best known for his influential titles Race Matters, Democracy Matters, and his memoir Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. His most recent work, Black Prophetic Fire, explores the radical vision and leadership of 19th- and 20th-century Black intellectuals and activists.

Dr. West’s address will mark the culmination of a weeklong celebration honoring the class of 2025 and milestone reunions for Morehouse alumni. Notable returning alumni include Dr. Robert Franklin (’75), 10th president of Morehouse College; Willie Woods (’85), Chair of the Morehouse Board of Trustees; former U.S. Congressman Cedric Richmond (’95); political commentator and attorney Bakari Sellers (’05); along with business executive and arts patron George Wells (’00).

Ava DuVernay and Dr. David A. Thomas will also receive honorary doctorates during the ceremony.

In addition to Dr. West, Morehouse College will also confer honorary doctorates on two distinguished individuals whose lives exemplify a commitment to leadership, creativity, and justice. Ava DuVernay is an award-winning director and storyteller acclaimed for Selma, 13th, When They See Us, Origin, and Brown Sugar. DuVernay is recognized as the highest-grossing Black woman director in U.S. box office history.

Dr. David A. Thomas, the 12th president of Morehouse College, will also be honored this year. He has led the institution through a transformative era, raising more philanthropic support than any president in the school’s 158-year history. Together, these honorees represent the incredible power of education, activism, and storytelling to shape a more just and compassionate world for students
