Firefighters safely extricated a trapped passenger Friday following a crash between a sedan and a commercial salt truck.

Fire services were called at about 11:30 a.m. to the westbound Highway 417 off-ramp at Boundary Road in the city’s east end. Original calls indicated up to five people were possibly trapped.

Firefighters arriving found the four-door sedan with major damage to the passenger side. All airbags in the sedan had deployed.

Four occupants were inside the vehicle on arrival, with only the driver able to exit independently.

Shortly after, a front passenger was able to crawl out of the vehicle, and two rear-seat passengers exited on their own.

One remaining occupant was trapped and unable to get out.

Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and charged a hose line as a precaution before beginning extrication operations.

One firefighter accessed the sedan through the driver’s side to assess and provide care to the trapped occupant, including injury management and warming with a blanket.

Firefighters used specialized hydraulic tools to remove the driver’s side rear door to make room for a backboard and the trapped occupant was safely extricated at 12:03 p.m.
