The last few months have been a true testament to the resilience and strength of the residents of Altadena, whose community was forever changed after the Eaton wildfires ravaged through the area back in January.
The rebuilding process is still in its early stages five months later, but a recent relief aid hopes to speed up the process and lessen the financial burden, specifically on Black residents who are finding it hard to secure the funds necessary to rebuild.
The Dena Care Collective is a wildfire relief initiative launched by former Black California mayors Aja Brown, who represented Compton, and Michael Tubbs, who previously represented the city of Stockton.
Brown and Tubbs recently began the distribution of direct aid to Black Altadena families impacted by the Eaton wildfires.
So far, more than $100,000 has been distributed to over 50 households in the community, and hundreds of additional applications are currently under review, as the Dena Care Collective plans to distribute a total of $1 million in recovery funding for impacted Black residents.
The initiative is part of a long-term strategy aimed at keeping Black Altadena families in place in the community.

Due to being either displaced, underinsured or facing increasing pressure to sell their homes below value, Brown and Tubbs have also launched the Altadena Recovery Community Development Corporation— which is a local effort to fight back against gentrification, protect generational ownership, and invest in community development.
The mission of the initiative is “to protect, support, and restore fire-impacted communities by providing comprehensive recovery solutions, ensuring fair land valuation, maintaining long-term affordability, and enabling generational wealth creation.”
“We exist to prevent displacement, protect assets, and empower local families to rebuild generational wealth in the wake of the devastating fires,” the initiative says.
