Four seriously injured after vehicle crashes into Rideau Street building

Three people were in critical condition after a vehicle crashed into Capital City Mission’s The Drop-In on Wednesday morning.

One elderly man was in life-threatening condition, and two men were in critical but non-life-threatening condition. One woman was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Marc-Antoine Deschamps, superintendent of communications for Ottawa paramedics.

The driver of the vehicle, and adult man, was also injured. He was in stable condition and his injures were not considered life threatening.

Paramedics got a call for the collision at about 9 a.m. The cause of the crash is not yet known.

A grey SUV sat with its front end smashed outside the front door of The Drop-In, and a pile of bricks lay on the ground, having fallen of the building’s facade. The frame of the shattered front door lay on a snowbank next to the road.

Police tape surrounded the scene in the wake of the crash.

The Drop-In provides meals, warm drinks, and clothing for people in need. They serve about 160 to 180 people per day, according to the Mission’s website.

, that Rideau Street was closed between Cobourg and Augusta streets. There was no timeline for when they would reopen.

“A vehicle struck a building and there are multiple serious injuries. Please avoid the area and clear the way for emergency vehicles,” police said.
