A Gatineau police officer has been charged with assault and uttering threats following a police investigation.

Quebec’s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecution authorized assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm charges against officer Jonathan Lévesque on Aug. 7, according to an Aug. 11 Gatineau Police Service (SPVG) statement.

The charges follow an investigation after SPVG’s professional standards section was informed that one of its officers may have committed a crime during a police intervention on June 9.

“The SPVG maintains high expectations regarding the professionalism and exemplary conduct of its police officers and confirms that these allegations are being taken seriously,” SPVG said.

Lévesque was suspended with pay since the beginning of the investigation, SPVG said, and will remain suspended until proceedings are concluded.
