Hamilton bank robbery attempt foiled by bike bandit: police

A bumbling bank robbery suspect fled a Hamilton BMO empty-handed and discombobulated after his getaway bike was stolen during a curious convergence of criminality.

Hamilton Police officers were called to the bank at 375 Upper Paradise Road at around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 18.

Investigators say a lone male arrived on a bike, leaving it outside, and walked into the bank.

The suspect (pictured below) approached a teller and passed a note demanding cash, police said in a release.

Investigators say he also verbally threatened the teller while motioning that he was in possession of a weapon.

Several bank employees called his bluff and confronted him, prompting him to leave empty-handed.

That’s when things took an interesting turn.

“Upon exiting BMO bank, the suspect returned to his bicycle location only to discover a fellow delinquent had stolen his bike,” Hamilton Police noted in a release.

“The dazed and confused male then kicked their legs in high gear and escaped north on Upper Paradise Road … on foot.”

He was last seen near Upper Paradise Road and Elmwood Avenue.

He’s described as white, five-foot-four to five-foot-eight, and was wearing a long, multi-coloured scarf, black sunglasses, blue surgical mask, black jacket with fur trim, black gloves, dark pants, and white shoes.

The bike thief, meanwhile, is described as a male wearing all black.
