Hudson’s Bay has laid off nearly 200 corporate employees whose last day will be next Friday, April 4.
The centuries-old retailer announced on Friday the first wave of layoffs to their corporate associates in North America since it filed for creditor protection in a bid to avoid bankruptcy on March 7. The retailer employs some 9,000 workers nationally, with more than half of them based in Ontario.
“This is a difficult reality of the restructuring process, and we are committed to treating associates impacted by these changes with respect and support,” said Tiffany Bourré, spokesperson for Hudson’s Bay.
All retail stores and the Hudson’s Bay website are continuing to operate, Bourré added. This week, the Canadian retail icon has started liquidation sales in 73 Hudson’s Bay stores, as well as two Saks Fifth Avenue and 13 Saks OFF 5TH stores in Canada.
More to come.
