We know it’s tough to sort through the content churned out by the 700,000 streaming services, so we’re bringing you a curated little list of what to watch right now.
Pick of the week
Doctor Odyssey
We don’t usually go in for newfangled medical procedurals around here (this is an “ER” household, thank you very much), but when “Doctor Odyssey” debuted, we begrudgingly admitted a grain of curiosity.
Canadian hunk Joshua Jackson? Senior hunk Don Johnson? Broadway hottie Phillipa Soo? Zany medical mysteries every week? Camp guest stars like Bob the Drag Queen, Shania Twain, Gina Gershon, Amy Sedaris, Margaret Cho and Margo Martindale? An opulent set, complete with swimming pool and custom gold medical instruments?! We downed the first half of Season 1 and were immediately cured of any malaise.
Dammit, Ryan Murphy, you’ve done it again! Now, we’re ready for another dose of maritime dramarama as our brave medical staff grapple with post-threesome awkwardness, pregnancy reveals and, most exciting of all, a two-part shark attack midseason premiere. Stream it Friday on the CTV app and Disney Plus.
Also on this week
1. Deli Boys
Losing your father is hard enough, let alone finding out that you’re now responsible for heading up the criminal enterprise that he ran out of his chain of convenience stores. Spoiled brothers Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh) find their new gig challenging, whether it’s drug-processing etiquette (clothes on or off, like they do in the movies?) or being tasked by their late dad’s BFF to off someone. Stream it on Disney Plus.
2. Douglas Is Cancelled
Many of us are just one bad tweet away from losing it all. Find out what happens to pompous newscaster Douglas (Hugh Bonneville of “Downton Abbey”) when a sexist joke he made gets retweeted to millions. Created by “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock” overseer Steven Moffat, the series also stars Karen Gillan (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Alex Kingston (“ER”) and Nick Mohammed (“Ted Lasso”). Stream it on BritBox.
3. Mafia: Most Wanted
Montreal and Vancouver aren’t the only mob hotbeds in Canada; our very own Toronto has its share of mobsters. This three-part docuseries tells the tale of the influential Canadian-born ’Ndrangheta criminal enterprise and how they used cocaine and killing to rise to the top of the underworld. Stream it Friday on Crave.
4. Visionaries
Beloved Canadian national treasure Keanu Reeves continues to beam out love and light in a show celebrating creative innovators in art and science. He and his Arch Motorcycle co-founder Gard Hollinger visit with everyone from ocean explorers to visual artists. Stream it Friday on the Roku Channel.
5. Travels With Agatha Christie & Sir David Suchet
Society’s fascination with Agatha Christie continues unabated; now fans can learn about the 10 months she spent travelling through South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Hawaii in her 30s as “Poirot” star Suchet retraces her steps. Stream it Saturday on BritBox.
6. The Righteous Gemstones
We get one last glorious church service with the sacrilegious Gemstone clan before they ascend into TV cancellation heaven. New season stars Seann William Scott and Megan Mullally will fit right in with these rascals. Stream it Sunday on Crave.
7. Filthy Fortunes
Matt Paxton and his daddy-esque stoicism were one of the highlights of long-running reality show “Hoarders”; now, he brings his endearing pragmatism to this “Storage Wars”-inspired reality show, where he ferrets out the high-end goods within the hoards. Stream it Sunday on Discovery Plus.
8. No Taste Like Home With Antoni Porowski
Produced by Gordon Ramsay, this sweet travelogue features the Canadian “Queer Eye” cutie accompanying stars like Florence Pugh, James Marsden, Justin Theroux and Issa Rae on journeys to their ancestral homelands to taste their culinary delights. Stream it Sunday on StackTV.
9. Confessions of Octomom
Ever wonder what happed to the tabloid-hounded mother of eight Nadya Suleman? (Well, technically 14, since she already had six kids when she popped out octuplets in 2009.) Now she finally gets to tell her story, in her own words. Stream it Monday on StackTV.
