Influenza surge slows, but Eastern Ontario hospitals are still under intense pressure

At Ottawa’s Queensway Carleton Hospital, the medical unit has been at 140 per cent capacity in recent days, leaving many patients waiting in emergency for hospital beds — as many as 32 patients at times, said Jen Plant, its interim vice-president of clinical services. Queensway Carleton, unlike Perth and Smiths Falls, has not had to cancel elective surgeries because of the pressure.
