Ja Rule and Juvenile recently sat down on Hip-Hop Wired’s exclusive series ‘I Got Questions’. The two rap legends chop it up about their favorite eras of Hip-Hop, ranking which ones they’d start, bench, and cut—and their choices had some interesting twists. Ja Rule went with the ’80s as his starter, saying that era laid the foundation for everything we know about Hip-Hop today.
For the bench, he picked the ’90s, which was obviously a legendary time with icons like Tupac, Biggie, and Nas. But the real shocker came when he decided to cut the 2000s, the very era that made him a star. Ja explained that he wouldn’t start himself over the true legends that inspired him to get into the game. It was a humble move showing that he respects the icons who came before him.
Juvenile, on the other hand, had a tough time picking just one era. He ended up choosing the ’90s as his starter too, mainly because it was the most successful era in terms of record sales and cultural impact. Juvi wasn’t trying to bench or cut any era—he’s got too much love for the culture across the board. The New Orleans superstar even shouted out his long-time friend, Scarface, saying he couldn’t cut the ’90s because Face’s influence helped shape his sound. Juvenile’s respect for all the eras showed just how much love he has for Hip-Hop, no matter which generation it’s coming from.
