ST. PETER’S BAY, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA – Lawrence MacAulay is not seeking re-election after representing eastern Prince Edward Island in Ottawa for nearly 37 years.
The Liberal member of Parliament for the Cardigan riding says he made the decision not to run in the next federal election with “a heavy heart, but no regrets.”
In a social media post today, MacAulay says he is no longer a young man, and he wants to spend more time with his family.
The 78-year-old was first elected to represent Cardigan in the House of Commons in 1988, and he is currently the minister of agriculture and agri-food.
He says he will stay on until a new member of Parliament for Cardigan is elected.
MacAulay joins a growing list of Liberals who say they won’t seek re-election, including former labour minister Seamus O’Regan in Newfoundland, former housing minister Sean Fraser in Nova Scotia, and Justice Minister Arif Virani in Ontario.
