Learning about how map turtles hibernate might help protect a vulnerable species

Opinicon Lake, about 100 kilometres south of Ottawa, is a relatively small body of water for map turtles, Bulté said. However, because it’s small lake, it has been relatively easy to track the turtle population over time. Some of the turtles are implanted with passive integrated transponders about the size of a grain of rice, similar to the computer chips used by veterinarians to identify pets.
