Monday marks the beginning of the end for Hudson’s Bay as the 355-year-old retailer begins liquidating its stores.
After filing for creditor protection earlier this month, an Ontario Superior Court justice approved on Friday Hudson’s Bay’s plan to liquidate all but six of its 96 stores across the country.
Three of the six spared stores are in the GTA: the flagship store on Queen Street West, the location at Yorkdale Shopping Centre and the store at Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill.
The remaining three stores are in Quebec.
Even ahead of the start of liquidation this week, droves of shoppers have descended on their local Hudson’s Bay to snag any remaining striped merchandise. Others online have been speculating about the potential sales.
Meanwhile, the Bay’s nearly 9,365 staff are facing the threat of looming layoffs.
10:59 a.m.: A small group of shoppers donning puffer coats and hats are already waiting outside of the Hudson’s Bay at Etobicoke’s Sherway Gardens ahead of the stores opening at 11 a.m. More people are heading over through the parking lot.
More to come.
