TORONTO – Just over a year after they opened, Loblaw Cos. Ltd. is closing a second location of the three No Name stores it was piloting as a bet on ultra-discount.
The grocer says it will close its LaSalle, Ont., No Name store near Windsor on Oct. 25, after already shuttering its St. Catharines store in July. A third location in Brockville will remain open.
Loblaw says the stores, which promised to deliver even lower prices than its existing discount banners, opened in September of last year and were meant to capitalize on the trend of shoppers flocking to value.
The company says there was a strong initial response, but the LaSalle location hasn’t built up the customer base needed to remain sustainable long-term.
Amar Singh, senior director at consulting firm Kantar, says the grocer had the right intentions, but missed a beat on execution.
He says the stores had a limited assortment of pantry staples, packaged bakery items and frozen products, but no refrigerated food like milk and eggs.
