A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple offences in connection with a sexual assault in Renfrew, the Ontario Provincial Police reported Friday.
A news release said the man had been apprehended by the Ottawa Police Service on Sept. 9 and was then transported to the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing that is to continue in Pembroke on Sept. 26.
The charges against the man include: assault; assault with a weapon; sexual assault; forcible confinement; overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle; pointing a firearm; two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm; criminal harassment; intimidation; mischief; obstruct a peace officer; and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.
The identity of the man cannot be released in order to protect the identity of the victim, the OPP said.
On Aug. 28, a woman reported to the OPP that she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted in Renfrew, about 90 kilometres west of Ottawa. The woman also indicated that the man, who was known to her, was in possession of a handgun.
The incident prompted a search of the area by members of the Renfrew detachment of the OPP, the OPP emergency response team, the canine unit and the tactics and rescue unit. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the immediate area until officers determined that the suspect had fled.
