A year after the case of hip-hop icon Jam Master Jay’s death was finally closed, a man convicted of the crime was reportedly stabbed in jail.

According to the New York Daily News, a fight broke out in the MDC Brooklyn jail in Sunset Park on Saturday, Feb. 22. NYDN reports that the brawl was between rival gangs, and that two men were hospitalized as a result of the fight.

Karl Jordan, who was convicted last year for the murder of Jam Master Jay, was reportedly stabbed and survived the attack after being hospitalized. He was being held in jail while awaiting sentencing.

Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizzel was one-third of Run-DMC, the formative rap group from Hollis, Queens that surfaced in the early 1980s and proved the genre’s commercial and artistic possibilities. They were the first hip-hop act to earn gold, platinum, and multi-platinum album certifications, the first to land a nomination at the Grammys, and the first to sign a major endorsement deal, among other accomplishments. Mizzel was the group’s DJ, a role much more front-facing for hip-hop acts in the 80s before they’d move to the background in subsequent decades. Fellow rap legend Chuck D, of the group Public Enemy, described him as “the center of Run-D.M.C. …He held it all together: the look, the attitude, the street wisdom, the credibility, the direction.”

Mizzel was murdered at his Jamaica, Queens recording studio in October 2002 under what were initially mysterious circumstances. While police investigations and extensive reporting sought to put the pieces together, it wasn’t until 2020 that two men, Karl Jordan and Ronald “Tinard” Washington were indicted for his murder. Prosecutors made the case that the two men plotted to kill Mizell after he cut them out of a drug deal. According to testimony in Brooklyn Federal Court, Washington was watching the door while Jordan fired the fatal shot. Jordan and Washington were convicted in February 2024, and Jordan was being held in the MDC Brooklyn jail as he awaited his sentencing.

Jordan and Washington’s lawyers have filed a motion to dismiss the case, claiming that Jay Bryant, a third man who was indicted in 2023, is the real murderer. According to reporting by the New York Daily News, Bryant’s uncle testified in court that Bryant confessed to the murder to him, and his hat was found in the studio with his DNA on it after the crime. Prosecutors have said he let the two men inside the studio through the rear door.
