Man faces drunk-driving charges after driver killed in Eaganville crash

A 61-year-old man faces a number of drunk-driving charges after an 81-year-old man died of injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday on Highway 41, south of Eganville.

In a release, provincial police said the crash occurred around noon in an area where vehicles had been stopped in a construction zone.

One vehicle failed to stop and struck the others. In all, four vehicles were involved.

The victim, a local resident driving one of the cars, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity was not released.

None of the other drivers suffered serious injuries, police said.

A 61-year-old Haliburton resident was charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death;
  • Refusal to comply with a demand for a breath sample — death;
  • Driving with an open container of liquor;
  • Having care or control of a vehicle with open liquor;

His driving licence was immediately suspended for 90 days.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on Aug. 5.

Highway 41 was closed until approximately 10 p.m. on Wednesday for the investigation and removal of vehicles.

Eganville is about 135 km west of Ottawa.
