Man jumps from second-floor window during fire on Granville Street

A 50-year-old man was taken to hospital after jumping from a second-floor window during a fire Sunday afternoon on Granville Street.

Ottawa Fire Services received multiple 911 calls at 1:29 p.m., with callers reporting that heavy smoke and flames were coming from a second-floor window and that one person was attempting to jump.

After arriving at the scene in the 200 block of Granville in the Rideau-Vanier ward, firefighters confirmed that thick, black smoke was visible at the home.

Additional resources were called to the location at 1:33 p.m. and a “fast attack” was started, with a hose line advanced into the building. By 2:06 p.m., the fire was deemed to be under control.

Two full searches of the home were conducted and no occupants were found inside.

An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson said the man who jumped from the window was taken to hospital in stable condition after suffering an ankle injury.

A fire watch was set up, with a truck remaining on site in case of any flareups.

An Ottawa Fire Services investigator was sent to the scene to find the cause and origin of the fire. Victim Services was also sent to the location.
