A wide search continues Friday in the Renfrew area following a “serious assault” on a woman Thursday.
Provincial police said in a release the case began when a woman went to a local hospital, saying that she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted at a motel on Raglan Street North.
The victim said she knew the suspect and that he had a handgun.
The man was later spotted on foot in the area.
Officers attempted to arrest him, but he fled onto the Algonquin Trail.
While police believed there was no threat to the public, a shelter in place advisory was issued just after 9 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution.”
The shelter in place was lifted shortly before 1 a.m. Friday morning, when it appeared the suspect had managed to flee from the area.
The suspect has been identified, and an arrest warrant is being sought.
His identity was not released.
Police described the man as Black, five feet nine to six feet (175-183 cm) tall, with hair on the top of his head and shaved on the sides. He has a goatee and a five-star tattoo above his left eyebrow and another tattoo under his left eye.
He was last seen wearing a purple plaid jacket, and possibly black shorts and a blue shirt.
Anyone who sees the person or sees other suspicious activity should call 911 immediately. Do not approach.
Police urged the man to contact the Renfrew OPP to turn himself in.
Anyone with information, or potentially relevant doorbell, dashcam or surveillance video is asked to call the Renfrew OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and refer to incident E251166365.
