REGINA – Saskatchewan’s Opposition NDP says it’s planning to introduce an emergency motion urging the province to address a crisis in Regina’s neonatal intensive care unit as some babies have been sent to North Dakota.
Rural health critic Meara Conway says it’s unacceptable for new mothers and their infants to be forced to go the United States because there’s no room in Saskatchewan.
She says her motion would require the province to publicly report on the number of babies in the neonatal unit until the issue is resolved.
The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses says the care unit is overcapacity, short staffed and running out of ventilators.
The union told Global News that the situation has led to families being sent to North Dakota, but it did not offer specifics.
Health minister Jeremy Cockrill has said overcapacity in the unit is a result of a surge in births but the hospital is not low on ventilators.
