Two people escaped serious injury despite having to be rescued from a kitchen fire in a multi-unit low-rise building in the Carlington neighbourhood on Thursday.

Ottawa Fire Services said a caller to 911 reported the blaze in the three-storey walk-up in the 1100 block of Shillington Avenue, near the Central Experimental Farm, just past 4:30 p.m. on July 17.

Two residents of the unit were rescued by firefighters about six minutes apart. The fire was declared under control at 4:56 p.m.. contained to its area of origin.

An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson said both individuals were assessed at the scene, but were not seriously injured and did not require transport to hospital.

The fire service said fans were used to ventilate residual smoke and the air quality was deemed safe for residents of the building to return to their units, although a “fire watch” was set up and a truck remained at the scene to monitor for possible flare-ups.

An investigator was assigned to determine the cause of the fire.
