Oasis has officially confirmed that they will play a show in Toronto next August as part of their highly-anticipated reunion tour.
The English band will perform a single show in Downsview Park at the newly announced Rogers Stadium on Aug. 24.
Pre-sale for the show will take place Thursday, Oct. 3, while the general sale opens on Friday, Oct. 4. Tickets will be available via Ticketmaster.
The North American tour will also include dates in Chicago, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Mexico City. American rock band Cage The Elephant has been slated as the opening act.
The beloved Britpop band, fronted by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, announced in August that they would be reuniting after 15 years with a string of shows in the U.K. and Ireland.
Since then, rumours have been swirling about a world tour with stops in North America.
Over the weekend, a giant Oasis billboard was erected at Yonge and Dundas in Toronto with the message: “Be careful what you wish for.” The words appear above a photo of the Gallagher brothers with the words “Monday 8AM ET” and “oasis” below.
Though still many months away, the Oasis reunion tour is already one of the most-anticipated live music events in the world.
Formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis rose to global success in the mid-‘90s with hits like “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Buoyed by their bitter rivalry with the London rock outfit Blur, Oasis came to define the Britpop phenomenon, which offered a brighter alternative to the grunge music that dominated the airwaves in the first half of the decade.
The band also became known for their offstage antics, their larger-than-life personalities and, of course, the bitter, never-ending bickering between the two Gallagher brothers. That tension culminated in the infamous backstage “row” at the Paris Rock En Seine festival in 2009.
In the subsequent years, a reunion seemed unlikely. In 2017, Liam told talk show host Graham Norton that he genuinely did not like his brother Noel.
Clearly, people change. Either that or there was simply too much money involved to say no. Now let us hope that the brothers can keep things civil until next August.
