One dead after Hintonburg apartment fire

One person is dead and 19 residents were displaced by a fire Sunday evening in Hintonburg.

on Armstrong Street was called in at about 6 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the unit where it started, but found an unconscious person in the apartment’s bathroom after extinguishing the blaze.

“Firefighters began life-saving measures, including CPR, oxygen therapy, and use of a defibrillator,” OFS said on the social media site X. “Upon arrival, (paramedics) assumed patient care, with Firefighters assisting in loading the patient into the ambulance. One firefighter accompanied paramedics to hospital to assist with continued resuscitation efforts.”

“It has been confirmed that the individual succumbed to their injuries at hospital.”

All the other residents were able to escape the building. The identity of the person who died has not been released.

“Ottawa Fire Services extends its condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident,” the service said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by OFS and the Ontario Fire Marshall.
